VIDALIA, Ga. – Maurice Veal’s putback with 26 seconds remaining was the difference as Brewton-Parker College edged the Savannah College of Art and Design 59-57 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday (Dec. 15) afternoon at the H. Ralph Parson Gymnasium on the campus of Vidalia High School.
The Barons, who swept the season series with SCAD, snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 5-8. The Bees fell to 5-8 and will play their final game of 2007 Monday (Dec. 17) when they host Southern Wesleyan University at 7 p.m. at Savannah High School.
SCAD battled back from a nine-point deficit (40-31) and took its first lead of the entire game at 55-53 on a jumper by Nick Maloy with 4:06 remaining. The Barons tied the game at 55 on a George Fudge 25 seconds on a layup. Maloy responded with a layup of his own with 3:22 left to give the Bees their last lead at 57-55. Charlie Piho tied the game back up at 57 on a layup with 3:01 to go.
It would remain tied until Veal’s game-winning basket with 26 seconds left after he rebounded teammate Jurbien Bryd’s missed shot. Maloy tried to give the Bees lead but his three-pointer corner from the left corner bounced off the rim, allowing Fudge to grab the defensive rebound and to be fouled with two seconds remaining. Fudge missed both free throws and allowed SCAD one last scoring chance; however, Xavier Blain-Cruz’s desperation three-point attempt fell short as the buzzer sounded.
Fudge led the Barons with 15 points while Byrd (12) and Piho (11) also finished in double figures. Veal grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and finished with seven points. Ron Kus paced the Bees with 15 points while Chas Johnson (11) and Nick Maloy (10) came off the SCAD bench and scored in double digits.
