SAVANNAH, Ga. - Kaona McGowan led three players in double figures as the Savannah College of Art and Design women's basketball team upset St. Thomas (Fla.) University 62-60 in a The Sun Conference contest Friday (Jan. 30) evening at the Ron Love Athletic Center on the campus of Savannah High School.
The Bees avenged a 75-30 loss to the Bobcats last month and improved to 11-9 overall and to 3-4 in the conference. St. Thomas, which entered the game in first place in the league, fell to 14-5 and 6-1. SCAD returns to action with a 2 p.m. home contest Saturday (Jan. 31) against Florida Memorial University.
SCAD found themselves in an early hole as the Bobcats jumped out to a 20-6 lead after Santana Lennon connected on a jumper with 11:58 remaining in the first half. The Bees got themselves back in the contest as they held St. Thomas scoreless for a four-minute stretch as SCAD reeled off 10 unanswered points to pull within four points (24-20) in the final minutes of the first half.
The Bees took their first lead since they scored the game's first basket at 37-36 on a three-pointer by McGowan with 13:07 left. SCAD took its largest lead - seven points (49-42 - on a long-distance basket from the left corner by
Shareese Richardson with 8:58 to play. The Bobcats rallied took take their final lead of the game at 54-53 on a Lennon layup with 4:18 remaining.
Katie Stover gave SCAD the lead for good at 55-54 on a putback 13 seconds later.
Krystle Remigio hit a short jumper and followed with a three-pointer before SCAD, which 14-of-19 from the free throw line, closed out the 8-0 run with a Stover free throw to take a 61-54 lead with 1:56 to play.
Back-to-back layups from Dominique Collier and a fast-break basket from Brittany Washington trimmed the SCAD advantage to a single point at 61-60 with 13.7 seconds. St. Thomas was thwarted in its comeback attempt as they only connected on 9-of-25 attempts from the charity stripe. The Bobcats had a chance to take a lead by Carissa Staiano missed a layup with 5.0 seconds later but Remigio, the smallest player on the court, grabbed the defensive rebound to preserve the win for the Bees.
McGowan led the Bees with 19 points while Stover recorded a double double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Remigio scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half for SCAD. Lennon led the Bobcats with 18 points while Collier added 16 points and 12 rebounds. Brittany Owens also tallied 14 points for St. Thomas.
