Florida Memorial edges SCAD 56-53

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Kiesha Alexander scored 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Florida Memorial University women's basketball team held on for a 56-53 The Sun Conference victory over the Savannah College of Art and Design Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon at the Ron Love Athletic Center.

The Lions improved to 13-7 overall and to 6-2 in the conference while the Bees slipped to 11-10 and 3-5. SCAD returns to action Friday (Feb. 6) when they travel to West Palm Beach, Fla., for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest against Johnson & Wales (Fla.) University.

Florida Memorial, which led 34-26 at the half, saw SCAD take its first lead of the second half when Janay Wilson connected on both ends of two free throws with 13:25 remaining. The Lions used a 12-2 run to take a 52-44 lead on a Bianca Sellers jumper with 6:10 left.

SCAD closed to within a point (54-53) after Wilson converted a free throw with 64 seconds to play. Sellers' jumper eight seconds later gave the Lions a three-point lead at 56-53. The Bees missed three shots in the final minute as they tried to mount a rally.

Butler added 11 rebounds for Florida Memorial while Wilson added 15 points for SCAD. Shareese Richardson and Kaona McGowan each tallied 10 points for the Bees while teammate Britteny Terry grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.

Reed Publications Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week

Men's Swimming
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah College of Art and Design men’s swimmer Alex Graudins has been named the Reed Publications SCAD Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Graudins, a freshman from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, won two of the three individual national titles for the Bees last week at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo.

Graudins claimed the first national title for the Bees as he won the 500-yard freestyle in a university-time of 4:27.44. He lowered his own record by nearly six seconds in the win. Graudins also broke his own university record as he won the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 15:42.28. He nearly had another win for the Bees as he came in second place in the 200 freestyle in a university-record time of 1:39.45.

As a team, the Bees finished in fifth place at the meet.

SAVANNAH, Ga. - XinYu Shang  has been named this week's Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Shang, who is the team captain for Team C.S.A. (Chinese Student Association), scored 34 points in the Intramural B Division Championship Tournament Feb. 28. 

 

C.S.A. narrowly defeated Free Agent Two in the semifinal game 47-42 before defeating the Ballers 49-39 for the championship title.
