SAVANNAH, Ga. -
Records fell on the opening day of the 2009 Wilmington Island Club Intercollegiate Monday (Oct. 26) as the Savannah College of Art and Design men's golf team leads after 36 holes.

The Bees, who have three golfers among the top six individuals, set a 36-hole tournament and college record as they shot rounds of 286 (+2) and 276 (-8) to stand at 562 (-6), 16 strokes better than second-place Johnson & Wales (Fla.) University in the 12-team tournament being played on the par-71, 6,715-yard layout at the Wilmington Island Club. The previous tournament record was 564 set by Berry College in 2007 and the Bees also eclipsed their 36-hole record of 567 set in the 2007 Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate.

SCAD's Loren Bunting is tied with Northwood (Fla.) University's Brett McCurdy Jr. after 36 holes at 137 (-5), one stroke off the tournament's 36-hole record. Bunting, who shot rounds of 72 (+1) and 65 (-6), tied a college record for the low 18-hole score (65) that was accomplished twice by Clint Colbert during the 2001 season. The 137 total by Bunting also set a new 36-hole standard for a SCAD golfer, surpassing the previous mark of 139 set by Jon Orchin in 2005 and Colbert in 2002. McCurdy Jr. tallied rounds of 70 (-1) and 67 (-4) for the fourth-place Seahawks.

Tom Hayes is in third place for the Bees at 139 (-3) after rounds of 68 (-3) and 71 (even) while Mika Becktor, who recorded three eagles on the day, is tied for sixth at 141 (-1) after rounds of 73 (+2) and 68 (-3). Scott Melton is tied for 13th place at 145 (+3) after carding rounds of 73 (+2) and 72 (+1). Sean Metcalf, who was playing as an individual, is in 21st place at 149 (+7) after registering scores of 74 (+3) and 75 (+4) while Andrew Marco, who was also playing as an individual, is tied for 22nd a stroke back at 150 (+8) with rounds of 76 (+5) and 74 (+3). Greg Richards shot identical rounds of 78 (+7) to stand in a tie for 42nd place at 156 (+14).

The 54-hole tournament concludes with the final round that will start at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 27).
