SAVANNAH, Ga. - The rewriting of the Savannah College of Art and Design men's golf record book continued Tuesday (Oct. 27) afternoon as the Bees captured the 2009 Wilmington Island Club Intercollegiate at the Wilmington Island Club.
The Bees won the 12-team event with a tournament- and college-record 54-hole score of 853 (+1), 20 strokes better than second-place University of South Carolina Beaufort. SCAD shot a seven-over par 291 in the final round to claim its first tournament title since they won the 2007 Florida Sun Conference tournament. It was also the program's fourth overall tournament championship. The previous tournament record was set by USCB at 891 last season's event while SCAD shaved nine strokes off the previous college mark of 862 set at the 2009 Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate Golf Championship.
Loren Bunting shot an even-par 71 on the par-71, 6,715-yard layout to earn medalist honors with a score 208 (-5), which established new tournament and college standards. The previous 54-hole tournament record was 217 by last year's winner George Thacker from USCB at 217. Bunting also lowered the college mark of 210 which was previously set by Clint Colbert at the 2001 Gordin Classic.
Bunting edged out teammate
Tom Hayes for the title by a stroke. Hayes, who was named to the all-tournament team, shot a one-under par 70 to finish at 209 (-4). Joining Bunting and Hayes on the all-tournament team were Northwood (Fla.) University's Brett McCurdy Jr. (210, -3), St. Thomas (Fla.) University's Esteban Aristizabal (214, +1) and USCB's Jon Pannone (216, +3).
The Bees had two other golfers record top-10 finishes as
Mika Becktor and
Scott Melton finished in a tie for eighth place at 218 (+5). Melton carded a final round of 73 (+2) while Becktor tallied a 77 (+6).
Sean Metcalf, who was playing as an individual, finished tied for 26th at 227 (+14) after a 78 (+7) while
Andrew Marco, who was also playing as an individual, came in 35th place at 232 (+19) after an 82 (+11).
Greg Richards rounded out the SCAD contingent with a tie for 45th place at 237 (+24) after an 81 (+10) in the final round.
This was the final fall event for the Bees. SCAD will return to action Feb. 8 at the Start-2-Finish Invitational in Sebring, Fla.
