Three Bees named to all-conference team; Melissa Batie named Coach of the Year

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Three Savannah College of Art and Design volleyball players - Olympia Haney, Allison Regas and Courtney Shelton - have been named to the All-The Sun Conference team Thursday (Nov. 12) evening at the tournament banquet held at the Sunset Harbor Yacht Club.

Haney, a 5-foot-9 sophomore outside hitter from Fairburn, Ga., is second in the conference in kills per set (3.3), ninth in digs (240), 11th in hitting percentage (.189), 14th in total blocks (47), 15th in blocks per set (0.4) and 18th in digs per set (2.1). Haney was also honored as player of the week in the league once during the season.

Regas, a 6-1 senior setter from Jacksonville, Fla., leads the league with 1,077 assists this season. Regas, who was named to the all-conference team for a second consecutive season, is also ranked second in assists per sets (9.3), fifth in total blocks (69) and 11th in total blocks per set (0.6). Regas was named the player of the week in the conference once this season.

Shelton, a 6-0 senior middle hitter from Kansas City, Mo., leads the conference and is ranked 21st nationally in hitting percentage at .366. The two-time player of the week in the conference is second in the league in total blocks (103), third in kills (322) and blocks per set (0.9) and fifth in kills per set (2.8). This is the second all-conference nod in her career as she was recognized in 2007.

In addition, head coach Melissa Batie was also honored as Coach of the Year in the league. In her second year at SCAD, Batie led the Bees to a 26-7 overall record and to second place in the conference with a 16-2 mark.

The Bees return to action Friday (Nov. 13) at the conference tournament being held at Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University. SCAD, which is the No. 2 seed in the six-team tournament, will play in a 7:30 p.m. semifinal match against the winner of the first round match between No. 3 seed Webber International University and No. 6 seed Northwood (Fla.) University.

Reed Publications Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah College of Art and Design men’s swimmer Alex Graudins has been named the Reed Publications SCAD Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Graudins, a freshman from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, won two of the three individual national titles for the Bees last week at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo.

Graudins claimed the first national title for the Bees as he won the 500-yard freestyle in a university-time of 4:27.44. He lowered his own record by nearly six seconds in the win. Graudins also broke his own university record as he won the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 15:42.28. He nearly had another win for the Bees as he came in second place in the 200 freestyle in a university-record time of 1:39.45.

As a team, the Bees finished in fifth place at the meet.

SAVANNAH, Ga. - XinYu Shang  has been named this week's Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Shang, who is the team captain for Team C.S.A. (Chinese Student Association), scored 34 points in the Intramural B Division Championship Tournament Feb. 28. 

 

C.S.A. narrowly defeated Free Agent Two in the semifinal game 47-42 before defeating the Ballers 49-39 for the championship title.
