DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Savannah College of Art and Design upset top seed Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University 25-18, 25-18 and 25-18 to capture the 2009 The Sun Conference Volleyball Tournament Saturday (Nov. 14) afternoon at the ICI Center on the Embry-Riddle campus.
The No. 2-seed Bees, which snapped a four-match losing streak to the Eagles, improved to 28-7 and earned the conference's automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship, which begins Nov. 21. Embry-Riddle fell to 24-8 and likely saw their season come to an end.
"It was a total group effort," said The Sun Coach of the Year Melissa Batie. "We knew that defense was going to be the difference in the match. We were able to take them out of their game and we were able to win the long rallies."
Allison Regas, Courtney Shelton and Jen Drouin each had 10 kills as the Bees hit .343. The Bees had 43 kills while only committing nine errors in 99 swings. Cathryn Gregson and Olympia Haney each added six kills. On the other side, SCAD limited the Eagles to hit.144 in the match.
Shelton also added five total blocks and Regas distributed 25 assists. Arynn Nease led the Bees with 12 digs while Drouin tallied nine and Haney seven. Regas and Gregson each had two total blocks.
