Six players earn postseason honors
The Bees open their 2007 season with a 5 p.m. home match against Shorter College Aug. 25.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Savannah College of Art and Design has had six players named to The Sun All-Conference Women's Soccer Team. Mindy Beck and Melissa Feuerriegel were first-team selections while Amanda Barj, Angela Kowalski, Miranda Podmore and Katie Putnam were tabbed for the second team.

Barj, a 5-foot-5 junior forward from Bolinas, Sweden, was second on the team for the Bees with seven goals, seven assists and 21 points in 2009. Barj, who was named to the all-conference team last season, is currently tied for fifth on the university's all-time career list for goals with 20 and is also ranked sixth in assists (12) and points scored (52). Barj is currently ranked 50th in the NAIA in assists per match (0.470).

Beck, a 5-9 senior midfielder from York, Pa., scored three goals and assisted on another one for seven points for SCAD this season. This is the second all-conference nod for Beck as she was named to the team in 2006.

Feuerriegel, a 5-6 senior forward from Clontarf, Queensland, Australia, led the Bees with 15 goals, nine assists and 39 points this season. The two-time offensive player of the week in the conference during 2009 is the university's all-time leader in goals (60), assists (28) and points scored (148). Feuerriegel, who has been named to the all-conference team each season, is ranked 15th in the NAIA in points per match (2.600), 22nd in goals per match (1.000) and total points (39), 26th in assists per match (0.600), 28th in total goals (15) and 31st in total assists (nine).

Kowalski, a 5-4 senior defender from Fort Wright, Ky., and Podmore, a 5-11 junior defender from Denver, Colo., helped anchor a defense that allowed just 1.60 goals per match. Kowalski added a goal in 15 matches while Podmore tallied an assist in 15 matches.

Putnam, a 5-6 sophomore midfielder from Brentwood, Tenn., played in 15 matches for the Bees this season. She scored a goal and assisted on another in 2009.

SCAD (8-7-0 overall, 6-3-0 The Sun) earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament and will face No. 1 seed Northwood (Fla.) University in a 3 p.m. semifinal match Saturday (Nov. 7) in West Palm Beach, Fla.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah College of Art and Design men’s swimmer Alex Graudins has been named the Reed Publications SCAD Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Graudins, a freshman from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, won two of the three individual national titles for the Bees last week at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo.

Graudins claimed the first national title for the Bees as he won the 500-yard freestyle in a university-time of 4:27.44. He lowered his own record by nearly six seconds in the win. Graudins also broke his own university record as he won the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 15:42.28. He nearly had another win for the Bees as he came in second place in the 200 freestyle in a university-record time of 1:39.45.

As a team, the Bees finished in fifth place at the meet.
Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week

SAVANNAH, Ga. - XinYu Shang  has been named this week's Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Shang, who is the team captain for Team C.S.A. (Chinese Student Association), scored 34 points in the Intramural B Division Championship Tournament Feb. 28. 

 

C.S.A. narrowly defeated Free Agent Two in the semifinal game 47-42 before defeating the Ballers 49-39 for the championship title.
