Bees finish second at conference, two runners qualify for nationals

LAKE WALES, Fla. -
The Savannah College of Art and Design men's cross country team finished in second place at the 2009 The Sun Conference Championship that was held Saturday (Nov. 7) at the Lekarica Golf Course.

In the process, the Bees had a runner earned all-conference accolades and two runners qualify for the NAIA National Championship that will be contested Nov. 21 in Vancouver, Wash.

The second-place finish was the best-ever result in the conference/regional meet in the program's history. The Bees finished with 56 points while Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University captured the event with 18 points.

Cesar Fernandez Lazaro was the top finisher for the Bees as he came in third place with a time of 26:56.44 in the 8K event. By virtue of being among the top seven finishers, he earned all-conference honors. He also qualified for nationals by being one of the top five finishers not on the winning team. Joining Lazaro as a national qualifier was Ben Harrison, who came in eighth place with a time of 28:41.27.

John Sutherland came in 15th place with a time of 29:46.08 and was followed by Carl Dominque (16th, 29:48.33), Patrick Cooley (17th, 29:56.79), Nick Curtis (19th, 30:07.95), Dillan Brinlee (20th, 30:12.26), Ed McDaniel (23rd, 30:25.32) and Joe Housel (28th, 31:09.36).

Reed Publications Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah College of Art and Design men’s swimmer Alex Graudins has been named the Reed Publications SCAD Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Graudins, a freshman from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, won two of the three individual national titles for the Bees last week at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo.

Graudins claimed the first national title for the Bees as he won the 500-yard freestyle in a university-time of 4:27.44. He lowered his own record by nearly six seconds in the win. Graudins also broke his own university record as he won the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 15:42.28. He nearly had another win for the Bees as he came in second place in the 200 freestyle in a university-record time of 1:39.45.

As a team, the Bees finished in fifth place at the meet.

SAVANNAH, Ga. - XinYu Shang  has been named this week's Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Shang, who is the team captain for Team C.S.A. (Chinese Student Association), scored 34 points in the Intramural B Division Championship Tournament Feb. 28. 

 

C.S.A. narrowly defeated Free Agent Two in the semifinal game 47-42 before defeating the Ballers 49-39 for the championship title.
