Savannah College of Art and Design's Olympia Haney and Courtney Shelton have been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's NAIA All-Southeast Region Team.

Haney was selected to the 14-member team while Shelton was an honorable mention choice. Both players helped the Bees to a 28-8 overall record in 2009. SCAD earned its fifth trip in the past six years to the NAIA National Championship after capturing The Sun Conference Tournament title.

Haney, a 5-foot-9 sophomore outside hitter from Fairburn, Ga., led the conference in kills (394) and fourth in kills per set (3.2), eighth in digs (259), 11th in hitting percentage (.188), 13th in total blocks (51), 15th in blocks per set (0.4) and 18th in digs per set (2.1). Haney, who was named to the all-conference team in 2009, was also honored as player of the week in the league once during the season.

Shelton, a 6-0 senior middle hitter from Kansas City, Mo., led the conference and is ranked 23rd nationally in hitting percentage at .355. The two-time player of the week in the conference finished second in the league in total blocks (120), third in kills (358) and blocks per set (1.0) and fifth in kills per set (2.8). Shelton also earned all-conference honors for the second time in her career (2007, 2009).

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah College of Art and Design men’s swimmer Alex Graudins has been named the Reed Publications SCAD Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Graudins, a freshman from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, won two of the three individual national titles for the Bees last week at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo.

Graudins claimed the first national title for the Bees as he won the 500-yard freestyle in a university-time of 4:27.44. He lowered his own record by nearly six seconds in the win. Graudins also broke his own university record as he won the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 15:42.28. He nearly had another win for the Bees as he came in second place in the 200 freestyle in a university-record time of 1:39.45.

As a team, the Bees finished in fifth place at the meet.

SAVANNAH, Ga. - XinYu Shang  has been named this week's Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Shang, who is the team captain for Team C.S.A. (Chinese Student Association), scored 34 points in the Intramural B Division Championship Tournament Feb. 28. 

 

C.S.A. narrowly defeated Free Agent Two in the semifinal game 47-42 before defeating the Ballers 49-39 for the championship title.
