Three-pointers help Warner defeat SCAD 77-67

Ivan Soberal scored a career-high 30 points as Warner University defeated the Savannah College of Art and Design women's basketball team 77-67 Friday (Feb. 13) evening at the Ron Love Athletic Center on the campus of Savannah High School.

The Royals improved to 8-17 overall and to 2-7 in The Sun Conference while the Bees slipped to 12-12 and 3-7. SCAD returns to action Saturday (Feb. 14) with a 2 p.m. home league contest against Webber International University.

With the game tied at 22, the Royals broke the game open with an 8-0 run as Tori Robison sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around two free throws by Karyna Cid to take a 30-22 lead with 5:06 remaining in the first half. Warner connected on 61.1 percent of its three-point field goals (11-of-18), including 6-of-11 in the opening 20 minutes.

The Royals, who led 41-28 at the half, pushed their lead out to 17 points (46-29) on a trey by Kendall Heath with 16:59 to play. The Bees got back in the game as they scored 11 unanswered points to close within six (46-40) on a jumper by Britteny Terry in the paint three minutes later.

SCAD got as close as five points (49-44) before Warner scored 11 unanswered points - nine by Soberal - of its own to take a 60-44 lead on two Soberal free throws with 9:21 left. The closest the Bees would come the remainder of the game was nine points on three different occasions.

Nakitia Prince added 16 points for the Royals while Robinson (11) and Cid (10) also cracked double figures. Katie Stover led the Bees with a double double - 22 points and 10 rebounds - while Kaona McGowan added 16 points. Terry also grabbed 10 rebounds.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah College of Art and Design men’s swimmer Alex Graudins has been named the Reed Publications SCAD Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Graudins, a freshman from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, won two of the three individual national titles for the Bees last week at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo.

Graudins claimed the first national title for the Bees as he won the 500-yard freestyle in a university-time of 4:27.44. He lowered his own record by nearly six seconds in the win. Graudins also broke his own university record as he won the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 15:42.28. He nearly had another win for the Bees as he came in second place in the 200 freestyle in a university-record time of 1:39.45.

As a team, the Bees finished in fifth place at the meet.

SAVANNAH, Ga. - XinYu Shang  has been named this week's Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Shang, who is the team captain for Team C.S.A. (Chinese Student Association), scored 34 points in the Intramural B Division Championship Tournament Feb. 28. 

 

C.S.A. narrowly defeated Free Agent Two in the semifinal game 47-42 before defeating the Ballers 49-39 for the championship title.
