JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Savannah College of Art and Design women's basketball players
Janay Wilson and
Katie Stover have been named first-team All-The Sun Conference selections Friday (Feb. 27) morning. Wilson was also recognized as the conference's Defensive Player of the Year as well as the Champion of Character Award winner.
Wilson, a 5-foot-8 guard from Warner Robins, Ga., averaged 11.5 points and 7.1 rebounds for the Bees, who finished the season at 14-13. She also dished out 111 assists and registered 96 steals. Wilson is seventh in NAIA Division II statistics in steals per game (3.538) and 34th in assists per game (4.231). Wilson helped the Bees to 25th in the nation as they held their opponents to a 59.231 scoring average. Wilson, who was a second-team all-conference selection and the Freshman of the Year in 2008, was named the league's player of the week once.
The Champion of Character Award is based on academics and the five core values - respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship - of the NAIA Champions of Character program. Wilson, who has a 3.83 cumulative grade point average as an interior design major, has also volunteered for the Down Syndrome Buddy Walk in Savannah and has been involved in reading programs at local elementary schools and college outreach missions.
Stover, a 6-3 center from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, led the Bees in scoring (12.4) and rebounds (7.6). Stover, who was a second team selection in 2008, was named player of the week in the conference twice this season and is currently ranked 18th nationally in field goal percentage (.524).
