Bees compete at conference track & field meet

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -
The Savannah College of Art and Design men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 2009 The Sun Conference Track & Field Championship April 19-20.

Both teams finished in seventh place in the meet. SCAD scored 12 points in the men's meet and 11 in the women's meet.

The best finish of the meet for the Bees came in the women's 800-meter run as Tracy Koch finished in second place with a time of 2:23.32, less than a second behind winner Anntionette Elam of University of South Carolina Beaufort. Laura Rekkerth finished in sixth place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:35.02.

In the men's competition, John Sutherland had the best finish for the Bees as he came in fifth place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase event with a time of 10:42.55 while teammate Kyle Downs placed seventh with a time of 11:29.94. Patrick Cooley came in sixth place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:14.86 while Joe Dougherty placed 11th with a time of 4:45.55. Ed McDaniel finished in seventh place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:15.17 while Nick Curtis came in ninth with a time of 17:25.42. Cooley was also the top SCAD finisher in the 800-meter run with a 10th-place time of 2:04.43 followed by Ben Harrison (12th, 2:05.93), Sutherland (13th, 2:06.63) and Dougherty (2:19.94).

SCAD returns to action May 15 when they will compete at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta.

Reed Publications Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week

Men's Swimming
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah College of Art and Design men’s swimmer Alex Graudins has been named the Reed Publications SCAD Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Graudins, a freshman from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, won two of the three individual national titles for the Bees last week at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo.

Graudins claimed the first national title for the Bees as he won the 500-yard freestyle in a university-time of 4:27.44. He lowered his own record by nearly six seconds in the win. Graudins also broke his own university record as he won the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 15:42.28. He nearly had another win for the Bees as he came in second place in the 200 freestyle in a university-record time of 1:39.45.

As a team, the Bees finished in fifth place at the meet.

SAVANNAH, Ga. - XinYu Shang  has been named this week's Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Shang, who is the team captain for Team C.S.A. (Chinese Student Association), scored 34 points in the Intramural B Division Championship Tournament Feb. 28. 

 

C.S.A. narrowly defeated Free Agent Two in the semifinal game 47-42 before defeating the Ballers 49-39 for the championship title.
