Six players earn postseason honors

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Six men's lacrosse players from the Savannah College of Art and Design have recently received postseason honors.

Dan Comite, Kenan Degirmenci, John Healy, Shelton Polka, Brandon Ussery and Stewart Yost were each named to the All-Southeastern Lacrosse Conference Division II team. Comite and Ussery were first-team choices while Healy and Yost were named to the second team and Degirmenci and Polka were selected to the honorable mention team. Polka also earned the conference's Rookie of the Year award.

In addition to the conference awards, Comite, Healy and Yost also earned Scholar-Athlete Award from the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association. To be eligible for the award, the player must have been named to their conference's first or second team and have at least a 3.20 or better grade point average (on a 4.00 scale).

Comite, a 5-foot-8, 150-pound sophomore long stick middle from Swampscott, Mass., tallied 37 ground balls for the Bees this season and added an assist.  Comite has a 3.87 cumulative grade point average as an advertising design major.

Degirmenci, a 6-0, 175-pound senior goalkeeper from Greenwood Village, Colo., recorded 221 saves in 16 matches this season, including five against top 10 teams in the MCLA. Degirmenci was one of three goalies in MLCA Division II to record at least 200 saves this season.

Healy, a 6-foot-0, 165-pound senior attack from Roswell, Ga., was named to the all-conference team for the fourth consecutive year. Healy contributed 37 goals and 56 points while contributing 19 assists. Healy has a 3.44 cumulative grade point average as an industrial design major.

Polka, a 5-7, 140-pound attack from Howe, Texas, led the Bees with 45 goals and 66  ground balls while adding 16 assists during the season.

Ussery, a 6-0, 180-pound senior defense from Savannah, Ga., led the defense with 47 ground balls and added two goals in 2009. Ussery was named to the all-conference team for a second consecutive year.

Yost, a 6-0, 185-pound senior midfielder from Bernville, Pa, finished the season with 11 goals and eight assists. Yost, who was named to the all-conference honorable mention team in 2007 and 2008, has a cumulative 3.33 grade point average as a film and television major.
