Stewart Jr. named to FCSL All-Star team

Mark Stewart Jr. hit .366 for the Bees this spring.
MAITLAND, Fla. - Savannah College of Art and Design Mark Stewart Jr. has been selected to play in the Florida Collegiate Summer League All-Star Game Wednesday (July 15).

Stewart Jr., a 5-foot-11, 175-pound rising senior infielder/catcher from Royal Palm Beach, Fla., was selected to play for the FCSL Anglers team that will compete against the FCSL Red Hats in the 7 p.m. game that will be held at Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Fla. In 16 games (15 starts) for the Leesburg Lightning, Stewart Jr. has a .286 batting average (12-for-42) with a home run and 5 RBI. He has also collected a double and a triple while compiling a .429 slugging percentage. Stewart Jr.  has accounted for nine runs and recorded seven stolen bases.

Stewart Jr., who helped the No. 22-ranked Bees to a college-record 39 wins in 2009 and to their first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Championship, is currently in his third season with the Lightning.  He batted .366 (78-of-213) for SCAD in 2009 with 13 doubles, six triples, two homers and 36 RBI.

The FCSL is a wood bat baseball league with five teams in central Florida. Founded in November 2003, the league provides a place in the Sunshine State for college players to play pure wood bat baseball against top-level competition. The FCSL is one of eight leagues affiliated with the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball - an alliance of college summer wood bat leagues which operate under NCAA legislation.

Reed Publications Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah College of Art and Design men’s swimmer Alex Graudins has been named the Reed Publications SCAD Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Graudins, a freshman from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, won two of the three individual national titles for the Bees last week at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo.

Graudins claimed the first national title for the Bees as he won the 500-yard freestyle in a university-time of 4:27.44. He lowered his own record by nearly six seconds in the win. Graudins also broke his own university record as he won the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 15:42.28. He nearly had another win for the Bees as he came in second place in the 200 freestyle in a university-record time of 1:39.45.

As a team, the Bees finished in fifth place at the meet.
Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week

SAVANNAH, Ga. - XinYu Shang  has been named this week's Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Shang, who is the team captain for Team C.S.A. (Chinese Student Association), scored 34 points in the Intramural B Division Championship Tournament Feb. 28. 

 

C.S.A. narrowly defeated Free Agent Two in the semifinal game 47-42 before defeating the Ballers 49-39 for the championship title.
