What a way to start the 2009 men's cross country season for the Savannah College of Art and Design.

SCAD claimed Division II victories - team and individual - at Friday evening's (Sept. 4) Gamecock Invitational.

In the 5K race, the Bees bested three other teams to win the meet with 22 points, 40 points clear of second place Benedict College. For the Bees, it was the program's second-ever team title. Leading the way for the Bees was freshman Cesar Fernandez Lazaro, who won the Division II event and was the third fastest overall out of the 77 runners that competed with time of 15:37.73.  It was Fernandez Lazaro's first individual title and the program's third overall.

SCAD had six other runners finish in the top 10 in Division II. Ben Harrison was second with a time of 16:27 while John Sutherland was fifth in a time of 16:56. Ed McDaniel placed sixth (16:57) followed by Joe Housel (eighth, 17:10), Patrick Cooley (ninth, 17:24), Nick Curtis (10th, 17:48), Carl Dominique (12th, 18:28) and Dillan Brinlee (16th, 19:29).

The Bees return to the action Sept. 19 at 9:30 a.m. when they travel to Hardeeville, S.C., for the Sand Shark Invitational.

Reed Publications Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah College of Art and Design men’s swimmer Alex Graudins has been named the Reed Publications SCAD Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Graudins, a freshman from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, won two of the three individual national titles for the Bees last week at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo.

Graudins claimed the first national title for the Bees as he won the 500-yard freestyle in a university-time of 4:27.44. He lowered his own record by nearly six seconds in the win. Graudins also broke his own university record as he won the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 15:42.28. He nearly had another win for the Bees as he came in second place in the 200 freestyle in a university-record time of 1:39.45.

As a team, the Bees finished in fifth place at the meet.
Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week
XinYu  Shang
Intramurals
SAVANNAH, Ga. - XinYu Shang  has been named this week's Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Shang, who is the team captain for Team C.S.A. (Chinese Student Association), scored 34 points in the Intramural B Division Championship Tournament Feb. 28. 

 

C.S.A. narrowly defeated Free Agent Two in the semifinal game 47-42 before defeating the Ballers 49-39 for the championship title.
