DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Five Savannah College of Art and Design baseball players -
Patrick Braswell,
Chris Emrey,
Mike Hines,
Stephen Shackleford and
Mark Stewart Jr. - have been selected to compete in the 2010 The Sun Conference All-Star game.
It's the second appearance in the annual all-star event for Braswell, Emery and Stewart Jr. and the first for Hines and Shackleford. The TSC All-Star game, which will be held at noon Saturday (Jan. 23) on the campus of Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University in Daytona Beach, Fla., features the top junior and senior players from the conference. Coaches nominated players from their teams to participate. The game will be an opportunity for draft-eligible players to be seen by professional baseball scouts.
Braswell, a 5-foot-8, 170-pound junior second baseman from Jacksonville, Fla., is a two-time all-conference performer. Braswell, who holds or is tied for 13 different offensive university records, led the Bees with a
.405 batting average (89-for-220). He also had 26 doubles, five home runs and 52 RBI. Braswell, who was named a player of the week in the conference in 2009, is ranked 15th in the NAIA in doubles per game with 0.419. Braswell set the single-season university record for hits (89), runs (62), RBI (52) and currently holds the career doubles mark with 55.
Emrey, a 6-4, 180-pound senior outfielder from Newark, Del., played in 59 games (25 starts) last season for the Bees as they won a university record 39 contests. He batted .271 (23-of-85) with a double, three triples and 14 RBI.
Hines, a 6-2, 190-pound junior outfielder from Lithonia, Ga., was third on the team with a .351 batting average last season (73-of-208). Hines collected 14 doubles, three triples and led the team with five home runs.
He also drove in 42 runs in 2009.
Shackleford, a 6-1, 185-pound junior right hander from Louisville, Ky., led the Bees pitching corps with a 2.69 ERA in 2009. Shackleford went 7-2 a year ago with one shutout and a save as he limited the opposition to a
.245 batting average. He accumulated 62 strikeouts in 93.2 innings pitch while giving up just 28 earned runs. Shackleford finished the season ranked 17th in the NAIA in innings pitched and 29th in ERA.
Stewart Jr., a 5-11, 175-pound senior infielder/catcher from Royal Palm Beach, Fla., was second on the squad with a .366 batting average (78-of-213). He added 13 doubles and a university record six triples to go along with two home runs and 36 RBI. The six triples were also the 15th most in the NAIA last season.
SCAD opens its 2010 season Jan. 29 with a 2 p.m. Pacific time contest against No. 2-ranked Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego.
