SAN DIEGO -
Point Loma Nazarene University pitcher Chad Blauer tossed a three-hit shutout as the No. 2-ranked Sea Lions defeated the Savannah College of Art and Design 2-0 in a non-conference baseball game at Carroll B. Land Stadium Friday (Jan. 29) afternoon.

PLNU improved to 1-0-1 while the Bees fell to 0-1-0. The two teams will conclude the three-game series at the picturesque stadium adjacent to the Pacific Ocean Saturday with an 11 a.m. Pacific time doubleheader Saturday (Jan. 30).

Blauer, who struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced, recorded 13 strikeouts as he raised his record to 1-0. SCAD starter Brice Schlosser absorbed the loss for the Bees and fell to 0-1. Schlosser, who was making his first career start for the Bees, allowed only six hits in 7 2/3 innings of work.

SCAD's best opportunity to score came in the top half of the fourth inning. Patrick Braswell, who went 1-for-4, started with a one-out single to center and moved to second on a Matt Zajac ground out. Braswell advanced to third as Mike Hines reached base on a fielding error by PLNU shortstop Tyler Kuehl. However, the threat fizzled as Braswell was caught stealing home as part of an attempted double steal.

Point Loma Nazarene pushed its two runs across in the bottom half of the inning. Wes Kartch and Keuhl led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to put runners at second and third. Kevin Newburg drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly to center. With runners on the corner, the Sea Lions added an insurance run when Kuehl scored on an attempted double steal.

The Bees also had a scoring opportunity in the eighth inning. Mark Stewart Jr. reached base with one out on a throwing error by Sea Lion catcher Drew Bernhard after striking out. Michael Imbriale added a two-out single to left to put runners at first and second; however, Blauer wiggled out of danger as pinch hitter Scott Shambaugh flied out to left field.
