Sea Lions sweep doubleheader from the Bees

Point Loma Nazarene University swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader from the Savannah College of Art and Design 14-3 and 10-2 at Carroll B. Land Stadium Saturday (Jan. 30) afternoon.

PLNU improved to 3-0-1 while the Bees fell to 0-3-0. SCAD returns home to face Flagler College Tuesday (Feb. 2) at 4 p.m. in the Bees' home opener at Historic Grayson Stadium.

In the opener, the second-ranked Sea Lions jumped on SCAD starter Nick Iuni (0-1) as they took a 9-0 lead through three innings. Wes Kartch, who went 2-for-3 with 4 RBI in game one, had a three-run homer to right field to highlight a five-run third inning. SCAD scored their first run on a leadoff homer in the fifth by Eduardo Acosta, but Point Loma Nazarene answered with three more runs in their half of the inning.

SCAD got its final runs in the ninth on a Patrick Braswell RBI double and a RBI ground out by Carson Parker.

Point Loma Nazarene jumped on the Bees at the start of game two as the Sea Lions took a 4-0 lead through two innings off SCAD pitcher Stephen Shackleford (0-1). SCAD cut the lead in half as the Bees pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Michael Imbriale and Scott Shambaugh.

The Sea Lions pushed across single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before breaking the game open with a four-run sixth. Allen Boyer had a solo homer for Point Loma Nazarene in the fourth while teammate Rashad Taylor added a two-run shot in the sixth.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah College of Art and Design men’s swimmer Alex Graudins has been named the Reed Publications SCAD Student-Artist-Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Graudins, a freshman from Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, won two of the three individual national titles for the Bees last week at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo.

Graudins claimed the first national title for the Bees as he won the 500-yard freestyle in a university-time of 4:27.44. He lowered his own record by nearly six seconds in the win. Graudins also broke his own university record as he won the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 15:42.28. He nearly had another win for the Bees as he came in second place in the 200 freestyle in a university-record time of 1:39.45.

As a team, the Bees finished in fifth place at the meet.
Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week

SAVANNAH, Ga. - XinYu Shang  has been named this week's Reed Publications Intramural Athlete of the Week ending March 7.

Shang, who is the team captain for Team C.S.A. (Chinese Student Association), scored 34 points in the Intramural B Division Championship Tournament Feb. 28. 

 

C.S.A. narrowly defeated Free Agent Two in the semifinal game 47-42 before defeating the Ballers 49-39 for the championship title.
