SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah College of Art and Design softball team pushed their win streak to six games as they picked up two more wins at the 2010 Boombah Smash Hit Spring Break Softball Tournament Sunday (Feb. 28) at the Paulson Softball Complex.
The 23rd-ranked Bees upset No. 19 Notre Dame College (Ohio) 9-6 in the opener before SCAD held off NCAA Division II's University of Findlay 9-7 in the nightcap. With the two wins, SCAD improved to 11-5 and will return to action Friday (March 5) with two games at the Smash Hit. SCAD will face Pikeville College at 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. rematch against Findlay.
Notre Dame jumped out to a 5-0 lead with five runs in the second inning. Christina Hutchinson drove in a run with a single and Mallory Harder knocked in another after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Melissa Dykes also had a two-run double to left-center field for the Falcons.
SCAD began its comeback in the bottom half of the inning.
Jessaca Spears had a RBI ground out before
Candle Pfefferle blasted a two-home run to left field to cut the deficit to 5-3. The Bees tied the game at 5 with two fourth-inning runs on sacrifice flies from Pfefferle and
Kasey Keown.
The Bees took the lead for good at 7-5 with two more runs in the fifth on
Dominica Jordan's double to right-center field.
Against the Oilers, SCAD took a 4-0 lead after two innings as the Bees score twice in both the first and second innings.
Kristen Curette had a RBI single in the first and Pfefferle and
Carleigh Shannon drove in runs for SCAD in the second.
Findlay put together five consecutive hits in the fifth to tie the game at 4. Jenna Motuza drove in two with a triple to right field, Cali Coppus followed with a RBI single before Kara Hochevar added a RBI double.
SCAD took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning on an unearned run and then added four insurance runs- including a leadoff homer to center by Jordan - in the sixth to take a 9-4 lead.
