GARDEN CITY, Ga. – The Savannah College of Art and Design and Ave Maria University split a baseball doubleheader Friday (March 12) afternoon at Chain Field.
The Bees took the win 10-0 in six innings in the opener before the Gyrenes took the nightcap 4-1.
The Bees improved to 15-9 while Ave Maria, under the direction of former SCAD assistant coach Shawn Summe, went to 13-10 in its inaugural season. The teams will close out the four-game series with a noon doubleheader Saturday (March 13) at Chain.
SCAD took a 1-0 lead in game one on
Shane Yoder’s sacrifice fly in the second inning. The Bees batted around in the third off Gyrene starter Stephen Ori and scored five times.
Kelvin Goodson stroked a two-run single to right while
Mike Hines added an RBI single to center and Yoder drove in another on a ground out.
The Bees pushed across a run in the fifth on a single from
Matt Zajac before SCAD closed out the game early in the sixth with three more runs.
Scott Shambaugh led off the inning with a homer while Hines and Yoder each drove in another run.
SCAD starter
Brice Schlosser (2-2) earned the complete-game victory as he allowed just four hits and struck out three.
Ave Maria took a 3-0 lead with a three-run second inning in the nightcap off SCAD starter
Nick Iuni (2-3). Chris Suchomski singled back up the middle to drive in the first two runs while Chris Loweree added an RBI single to center. The Gyrenes added an unearned run in the fifth before the Bees got a run back on
Patrick Braswell’s third homer of the season in the fifth.
Nolan Luyk earned the win for the Gyrenes while Tom Bracht earned the save with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
