SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah College of Art and Design and King College split a softball doubleheader Friday (March 12) afternoon at the Paulson Softball Complex on the final day of the Boombah Smash Hit Tournament.
The Tornado won the opener 7-1 to snap a 12-game winning streak for the 23rd-ranked Bees. SCAD responded by scoring eight first inning runs en route to an 8-0 victory in five innings in game two.
The Bees improved to 18-6 and will now travel to Tucson, Ariz., over spring break to compete in the Tucson Invitational Games. SCAD will face No. 5 Lubbock Christian University at 10 a.m. Pacific time Wednesday (March 17) followed by a 12:30 p.m. contest against No. 2 Dickinson State University.
King jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener on RBI hits from Megan Lilley and Shauna Haga off SCAD starter
Sam White (9-4). The Tornado added their final run in the inning as Stephanie Mueller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. King pushed their lead to 5-0 in the fifth as Mueller led off with a homer to right and Samantha Watts drove in a run with a single.
The Bees got a run back in their half of the fifth on a
Krista Ross single to left but that would be as close as SCAD would get.
SCAD jumped on Watts - the game two starter for the Tornado – in the first inning as the Bees sent 12 batters to the plate.
Kristen Curette,
Courtney Mienkina,
Dominica Jordan,
Jessaca Spears and
Kylie Rash each drove in a run while Ross’ double to right scored two more for the Bees.
SCAD starter
Kiara Boccia improved to 7-1 as she allowed the Tornado three hits as she pitched her second shutout of the season.
