GARDEN CITY, Ga. – For the second consecutive day, the Savannah College of Art and Design and Ave Maria University split a baseball doubleheader at Chain Field Saturday (March 13).
The Bees won the opener 5-0 while the Gyrenes rallied to take the second game 7-5. SCAD improved to 16-10 while Ave Maria improved to 14-11. SCAD returns to action Tuesday (March 16) when they travel to Ormond Beach, Fla., for a 6 p.m. contest against Indiana Institute of Technology.
SCAD pitcher
Stephen Shackleford (5-1) was dominating in the first game Shackleford struck out seven and only surrendered three hits. The junior from Louisville, Ky., only allowed three runs to get to second base and coaxed the Gyrenes into two double plays.
The Bees got all the offense they would need in the third inning against Ave Maria pitcher Justin James, who pitched for SCAD last season.
Mike Hines stroked a two-run double to right field while
Shane Yoder blasted his first homer – a two-run shot – to right to give the Bees a 4-0 lead.
The Bees took a 4-3 lead in bottom of the sixth inning in game two as
Will Cioffi singled in a run with a hit to center field. Ave Maria rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh off SCAD reliever
Ty Donaldson (2-1).
Pete Lesniewski tied the game at 4 with a single through the left side and then took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Matt McKay. Trace McDermott and Cory Muren added back-to-back RBI singles to give the Gyrenes a 7-4 lead.
SCAD got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a throwing error, but that would be as close as they would get as Tom Bracht earned his second save in as many days. Chris Suchomski earned the win in relief for Ave Maria.
