ST. PETERS, Mo. – The Savannah College of Art and Design women’s swimming team remains in first place Friday (March 5) at the NAIA National Championships at the St. Peters Rec-Plex.
The Bees, who are the defending champions, leads the field with 386 points through 14 events and holds a 58-point advantage over California Baptist University – the four-time champion that SCAD unseated a year ago - entering the final day of competition.
Melanie Futscher also picked up a second-place finish for the Bees as she finished the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:37.32.
Liz Roberts finished in second place in the 100 breaststroke in a university-record time of 1:03.99, 0.05 seconds behind winner Alison Berrin from Concordia (Calif.) University. Roberts was one of four SCAD swimmers in the event.
Kaycee Corso finished third (1:04.46) followed by
Kelsey Coffey in fourth (1:05.30) and
Zenobia Duncan in seventh (1:06.40).
The 200 freestyle relay team of Tori Aboud, Duncan, Roberts and
Megan Lawless finished third in the event with a time of 1:37.39.
Nicole Dumont came in fourth in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:55.04. Aboud also came in seventh place for the Bees with a time of 1:57.63.
The 400 medley relay team of
Mary Ashley Krogh, Corso,
Heather Librizzi and
Savanah Watts came in fifth place with a time of 3:57.53.
The Bees had three swimmers compete in the 100 butterfly.
Gianna Grace finished sixth in a time of 58.50 followed by Coffey in seventh (58.70) and Librizzi in eighth (58.95). Krogh also finished sixth for the Bees in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.36.
The NAIA championships concludes Saturday (March 6) with preliminaries at 10 a.m. Central and the finals beginning at 6 p.m. Events to be competed include the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay.
